Do you have hungry little monsters to feed in your home? Do they come home from school ready to play but also very hungry? Then this post is for you. I will show you how to find the perfect snacks for kids and also make something absolutely delightful using them.

Usually, I make a list of snacks that we want for the week and shop during the weekend when I can be more relaxed and spend time making our selections. (I must also admit that I am one of those people who actually enjoys grocery shopping!)

The kiddo’s school also collects Box Tops for Education so that they can earn money for various school activities. Now with the Box Tops for Education® Bonus App, you can buy 5 participating items and scan your receipt to earn a whole fiver (50 Bonus Box Tops) until 31st January. You can also earn Bonus Box Tops in the Box Tops Bonus App in combination with the on-pack Box Tops clips and any other coupon, discount, store program or promotion. I think it’s a great deal for educators and parents alike, don’t you think? Every little bit counts.

You can download the Box Tops Bonus App to make school fundraising as easy as 1-2-3 (Buy, Scan & Earn) on iTunes and Google Play.

There are a ton of delicious breakfast and snacks on offer and these are a few of our all-time favorites that I stocked up on during my recent Walmart grocery run.

  • Honey Nut Cheerios™
  • Yoplait® Original Fridge Pack
  • Mott’s Medleys® Fruit Snacks
  • Nature Valley™ Oats N Honey Granola Bars
  • Annie’s™ Cheddar Bunnies

Just look for the little Box Tops for Education official coupon on the boxes and you’re good to go.

I also like to use these snacks in unexpected ways and create a fun treat for the family. Recently, I made cute little Cheerios, Yogurt & Caramel Tartlets. I made Honey Nut Cheerios™ cereal crust for the tarts and filled them with Yoplait® fruit yogurt. I topped them with fresh berries and a generous drizzle of homemade caramel sauce before serving. Yum!

And by the way, the caramel sauce is a cheat’s version made by cooking brown sugar, butter and cream together. This way, you do not have to worry about caramelizing (or burning) the sugar or hot caramel drops flying everywhere. I use this brown sugar caramel sauce on cakes, cupcakes, pancakes, milkshakes, and more. You should make it too.

Author: Anjana Devasahayam
Recipe type: Dessert, Snack
Cuisine: American
Serves: 4
You will need:
For the crust,
  • Honey Nut Cheerios - 1 cup
  • Brown sugar - 1 tbsp
  • Butter - 2 tbsp, melted
For the filling,
  • Yoplait fruit yogurt - 2, 6-oz cups
  • Fresh strawberries - 4, sliced
For the caramel sauce,
  • Brown sugar - ¼ cup
  • Heavy cream - 2 tbsp
  • Butter - 1 tbsp
  • Vanilla extract - ¼ tsp
  • Salt - a pinch
How to:
  1. Pre-heat oven to 350 deg.F. Lightly grease four mini tart tins. Set aside
  2. Crust: Pulse the cereal in a food processor to crumble it. Tip into a bowl. Add melted butter and sugar and mix well to form a crumbly, slightly wet mixture.
  3. Add 2-3 tbsp of the cereal mixture into each tart pan and using a spoon, press it down firmly in the bottom and up the sids of the pan.
  4. Bake tart pans for 7-8 minutes. Remove from the oven and cool them before filling. I pop them into the fridge for 5-10 minutes.
  5. Caramel sauce: Make the caramel sauce when the tart crusts are baking. Take all ingredients in a small saucepan and start heating on medium-low heat till everything is well combined.
  6. Continue heating, whisking constantly, for 4-5 minutes or until slightly thick.
  7. Stir in vanilla extract and salt and remove from heat. Cool slightly and pour into a jar.
  8. Tart filling: Fill tart crusts with a few spoons of either strawberry or peach flavored yogurt. Garnish with a few slices of fresh strawberries and drizzle some caramel sauce on top before serving.

I think I forgot to send my first comment. Anyways, I love these Anjana! Cherrios has been a standard for many breakfasts but the regular kind. I will have to break down and buy some Honey Nut as I am sure they make a difference in your recipe. Can’t wait to try these – thanks for sharing with Fiesta Friday 🙂
