Mango Jalapeño Basil Mockarita

May 25, 2018 by Anjana @ At The Corner Of Happy And Harried 9 Comments

Mango Jalapeño Basil Mockarita made with juicy mangoes and jalapeño simple syrup, and topped with garden-fresh basil and club soda is a gorgeous summer drink. Fresh and sweet with a spicy kick, it is refreshing and so much fun to make. Feel free to replace the club soda with tequila for a true margarita!

MANGO JALAPENO BASIL MOCKARITA - HAPPY&HARRIED

I have a fun and peppy summer beverage recipe for you today. It’s perfect for the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. Summer is gonna be a scorcher this year, we are touching the 100 degree Fahrenheit mark already. But, but… I am super excited for all the summer produce and the things I’m gonna be making with them.

MANGO JALAPENO BASIL MOCKARITA - HAPPY&HARRIED

Mocktails, iced teas, sorbet, granita, fruit studded cakes, and tarts have me super excited even when my body feels like it is being roasted in a giant oven. Probably not the best analogy, but you get my point, don’t you?

Last summer, I had a bountiful supply of peppers in my little garden. Unfortunately, I lost the plants to an early frost and they never revived. But, my basil and the herbs are doing so good.

In fact, my basil is doing so good, that it has started blooming. But some lovely folks on Instagram suggested that I trim the blooms so that the plant is not stunted, so I find myself with a surplus of fresh basil leaves this week.

It was time to come up with a new summer beverage. Something cold and refreshing, with a little kick to it. How about jalapeños?

I made a quick simple syrup infused with lime and jalapeños and mixed it with fresh mango puree. I served this mango concentrate in a glass with muddled basil leaves, lots of ice and topped it off with sparkling soda water. We do not consume hard liquor, so this was the closest I was gonna get to a glass of mango margarita. But if you fancy the real deal, feel free to add a splash of tequila!

This mango jalapeño basil mockarita is perfect if you like a little surprise flavor in your drink. When you take a sip, you instantly get the mango flavor and then a little kick from the jalapeños. When I made the syrup, I strained the jalapeños out but you could leave them in it overnight for a more intense flavor.

My son is not a big fan of this summer drink with a spicy kick, but the hubby and I find it delicious. So I would say that this is more of a grown-up beverage.

Author: Anjana Devasahayam
Recipe type: Beverages
Cuisine: American
Serves: 6-8
You will need:
  • Water - 2 cups, divided
  • Sugar - 1 cup
  • Jalapeño - 1 small, sliced
  • Lime juice - 2 tbsp
  • Mango puree - 2 cups, preferably fresh
  • Fresh basil leaves - ½ cup
  • Club soda or sparkling water - 2 cups
  • Ice cubes - as needed
How to:
  1. To make the simple syrup, heat 1 cup each of water and sugar in a small saucepan. Add the jalapeño slices and bring to a slight boil. Turn off the heat and stir in the lime juice. Let the peppers infuse for 5 minutes, then strain the syrup into a clean jar and chill until needed. (You can also store the syrup without straining for an intense jalapeño flavor.)
  2. In a pitcher, mix together the mango puree with the remaining cup of water and the prepared simple syrup. This mango concentrate can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  3. To make a glass of mockarita, muddle 1-2 basil leaves in a glass and fill with ice cubes. Fill halfway with the mango concentrate and top with club soda or sparkling water. If you fancy a proper cocktail, add an ounce of tequila instead of club soda. Serve immediately.
