‘Good Enough’ Re-purposed Table With Curtain

June 28, 2013 by Anjana @ At The Corner Of Happy And Harried 31 Comments

Blue Table

Imagine the most boring, yellowish brown, laminate wood table/nightstand with the drawers missing. I had such a piece in a dark corner of our house, holding our extra shoes. Our apartment does not have a mudroom and I could never imagine having grimy sports shoes in the closet. Yuck! We have a shoe rack neat the front door, but where do I store the overflow? Hence, the  table/nightstand/shoe-holder-thingy with the nifty storage space underneath.

We used to hide that thing whenever we had friends over. But I couldn’t bear to part with it, I loved its clean lines, and always dreamt of updating it somehow. Feeling confident after my first paint project, I knew a coat of paint would do wonders for this piece. I am sorry I don’t have a before picture.

It was so difficult to sand the thing by hand. I never knew particle board was so tough. Since it was not such an important piece of furniture, I thought I would paint it anyway. I used the same blue paint I used for my stool makeover – Just Jazz by Olympic One.

Best.decision.ever!!!

I am so glad to have got rid of the yellowish hue. I am happy to have finally updated it, and simply choose to ignore the slight drips and brush marks.

Painted Blue Table

All it needed next was a covering of some sort. Then I could use it for storing away shoes or anything I fancied. I decided to make a curtain for it. Now no one will ever know what lies beneath! Wait, that sounds like a horrible horror movie line!

I used the blue and green polka dot fabric I showed you in this sneak preview post. I improvised and used a thin white ribbon to hold the curtain. No dowels or drilling involved!

I experimented with some decorative vignettes on it! Remember my June {Ditto} DIY Challenge post?

Gold in Tabletop Vignette 6

And oh, to keep things real, here is the dreaded behind-the-curtain shot. Shoes!

Shoe Holder

I can’t believe I water-marked that image!

Anyway, this is a huge improvement from the terrible beat-up table we were using.

Okay, so I guess the bottom-line here is that it is good to be a perfectionist, but sometimes you just have to go for ‘good enough’ and do it already! Maybe someday, when I own fancy power tools, I might consider doing a proper job and fixing up drawers for the poor little table.

Is there a project that you did, just so you could be done with it, and not have to think too much about? Let me know in the comments.

Here is another fun ‘Before & After’ type makeover project : My painted chair turned stool.

Very cute! How did you attach the ribbon to your cabinet?

Thanks Lauren! I just wrapped it around the table and tied it tightly. For a permanent fix, it could be hot glued down or fixed with two little nails.

Love color of table/ curtain, and stool. Such a pretty clean looking blue. The fabric is perfect for your table. Put some shelves inside your table then you’ll have more room for more shoes. Great post. Happy 4th.

Great renovation project! Pinning it. Wish you took a before shot, but I can imagine the ugly yellowish hue. I like how this is a cute and functional piece. We all need places to hide things from out guests. 🙂

Great furniture makeover. I’m a total perfectionist but agree that sometimes what we notice others don’t and I should just get on with it. I love the blue colour, its turned it into a real feature piece. Bright painted furniture can really add style and fun pops of colour to a room – great :O)
