{Ditto} DIY: Upcycled Trash Receptacle – To Do Or Not To Do

August 7, 2013 by Anjana @ At The Corner Of Happy And Harried 16 Comments

You might remember the {Ditto} DIY monthly design challenges that I took part in. The aim of the challenge is to find simple, bite-sized ways to add fine design elements into our own homes – a month at a time! August’s challenge is to “Add a classy pattern to a trash receptacle“. Here is the inspiration picture.

Okay, so this is kind of out of my league. It is a simple enough challenge, but I can’t exactly create an artistic vignette with it, right?!! I did create something, but didn’t think it worthy enough to share. So, I decided to pass this month.

Then I came to know that this will be the last challenge for a while. And when I looked at the links, I found many other awesome bloggers stumped by this challenge! Sometimes, things just don’t work out all that well. And there is no shame in admitting to it!

Re-doing a trash can would have been the last thing on my list. My craft trash bin or waste basket is a simple red plastic one. I decided to cover it with this green fabric. I love its subtle geometric pattern.

Red Trash Can and Green Fabric

I glued the fabric all over the bin as neatly as I could. Since the bin was tapered, I created little pleats at the sides with the fabric. To keep the inside edge neat, I glued a strip of red ribbon.Clothespins held it in place while the glue dried.

Fabric Covered Trash Can

Here it is, all covered up. I can see the improvement from the boring red plastic anyway, can’t you?!

A set of such bins would work as cute storage bins too, maybe for toys and stuff.

But ideally, I would like these pretty trash cans. Click on each image to go to the store where they are available. They are now available in all sorts of shapes and deigns to suit any decor.

I never imagined I would do a post on trash receptacles, but here it is!

And before you go, here are the previous {Ditto} DIY Challenge entries.

July’s “Framed Fabric Art” challenge. This is my favorite, since I created something really unique and revived an old hobby!Framed Fabric Embroidery Art Vignette And, here is June’s ‘Go for Gold‘ entry. Thank you for linking into Colours Dekor… This is such a super cute idea.. Totally loved it.. I know what you mean by ‘pretty trash cans’… I have one in the guest bathroom, which is a copper one.. but has a kind of round base… which I’ve kept so people can put used towels in… Although.. I’d like something more unique… Should do a post on this.. 🙂 Thanks again.

Oh.. and I totally loved your blog.. Its awesome.. 🙂

I am visiting via Cozy LIttle House.

It is funny that one of my projects for the day was to find a different receptacle for the bathroom trash. I was going to go out and buy something, but you have inspired me to make something from what I have.

That turned out cute! I especially like how you finished the inside edge with ribbon. I’ll have to remember that for the next time I’m playing with fabric. And thanks so much for stopping by my blog! ~Ali from Pies & Puggles
