Summer Cooler – Mango Peach Lassi

August 28, 2013 by Anjana @ At The Corner Of Happy And Harried 37 Comments

Make this delicious, creamy lassi with the best summer fruits – mangoes & peaches!

MANGO & PEACH LASSI - HAPPY&HARRIED

(This post has been updated in June 2017).

Who hasn’t heard of lassi? The Indian (Punjabi, to be exact) version of the quintessential milkshake. Lassi is a yogurt based drink, usually savory with a pinch of salt and may be spiced lightly with paprika, cumin or mint. But it is the sweeter cousin which is more popular in our home.

MANGO & PEACH LASSI - HAPPY&HARRIED

Lassi can be made with just yogurt, sweetener and sweet spices like this recipe for Cardamom Mint Lassi. For a more robust drink, it is common to add fresh cream or even butter in the mix. Lassi malaai maarke or lassi with cream is the traditional rustic Bollywood hero’s drink of choice!

MANGO & PEACH LASSI - HAPPY&HARRIED

In summer when mangoes are abundant, mango lassi is the way to go. And what if you add a luscious peach to the mix? Can I already say “Yum”! Lassi can be made with almost any fruit. It is basically a yogurt smoothie made with fresh, seasonal fruits.

MANGO & PEACH LASSI - HAPPY&HARRIED

This mango peach yogurt smoothie or lassi is great as a cool summer beverage, midmorning snack or even quick breakfast smoothie.

MANGO & PEACH LASSI - HAPPY&HARRIED

Please use fresh, ripe fruits for best results. But feel free to experiment with canned pulp or fruit too.

Author: Anjana Devasahayam
Recipe type: Beverages
Cuisine: Indian
Serves: 2
You will need:
  • Yogurt - 1 cup, cold
  • Milk - 1 cup, cold
  • Mango - 1 medium-sized, roughly chopped (see Notes)
  • Peach - 1, medium-sized, roughly chopped
  • Sugar - 2-3 tbsp (or as needed)
  • Cardamom powder - ¼ tsp
  • Salt - a small pinch
  • Mint leaves - for garnish (optional)
How to:
  1. Blend all ingredients together till smooth and creamy. Taste and adjust sweetness as desired. Pour into tall glasses and serve chilled garnished with mint leaves.
Notes:
1. I like to use sweet mangoes without much fibrous flesh. I would recommend the Indian Alphonso variety or Mexican Ataulfo one.

I love mango lassi but I have to confess I didn’t know there was as savoury version… Must be very interesting!

Yes, buttermilk or whipped yogurt with a dash of salt is an excellent thirst quencher, without the added calories of sugar. People in India have it all the time.
