Welcome to part three of the monthly Photography Styling Challenge. The first month we photographed food, then we styled a table setting. This month’s theme is wall vignette.
For this challenge, I wanted to create something fun, preferably textured, and that got me thinking about a Basket Wall Display. I initially toyed with the idea of creating a set of hanging vases and then ditched it. So, here is a fun little wall vignette.
I gathered a few wicker baskets I had lying around the house. I played around with different placement and orientation combinations on the floor before finally putting it up on the wall. To add interest and texture, I also used my book page wreath mounted on an old framed print. Just my luck, the frame had no glass and I easily mounted the wreath on it.
I love how it adds texture and interest to our dining room wall. I felt it was missing something, till I chanced upon this big ceramic pot and decided to bring some greenery inside.
I had to include this close-up shot.
I found that it creates a nice photo backdrop if I prop Boy up on the table beg Boy to stay and pose for me on the table! For now, this plant will do.
There is something very organic with all the baskets, old paper, dark wood, greenery and pottery.

i love the texture, here, and I keep meaning to do something like this for fall. I have collected textured trays, but my issue is hanging them. do you have just a nail, and then it resting on the nail? or did you use a removable way to hang them? thanks!
Hi, So glad you liked them.
I hung these baskets using a couple of methods.For the rectangle and round ones, I threaded embroidery floss tightly around a weave and hung them. I learnt that trick here – http://www.blissbloomblog.com/2012/09/home-african-basket-wall-decor.html#.UiYhWdId5VI
I also added removable wall mount stickers at the flat edges so they would stay flush with the wall.
The thin oval one is resting on two nails. It refuses to hang flush with the wall, and so I inverted it (bottom side out) and rested it on two nails.

Hey Anjana! Good job! My comments: Be mindful of where you crop your images. The second image, the top of the frame is chopped off? But maybe intentional?! The first one I would have probably just cropped out the plant and made the vignette be the subject highlight.
I know you popped a bit of colour in by using the plant but maybe a bit more colour within the vignette itself.
What is clear, is that you are certainly using your focus on the camera or at least trying to.
Rather that positioning these things on the walls, maybe if you have a shelf at home try to arrange them on there including the plant, and see what that looks like. Almost like a beautiful shop shelf display.
I’m just trying to be super picky here because that’s only how we can help each other for our next shoots 🙂

I decided to stay true to the theme of ‘Wall Vignette’ and not use a table to prop up the items. I did get to play around a lot with both AF and MF modes on my camera. I think the last photo is the fave among the lot.

Thank you! It was tough finding different angles to shoot it from. I think adding the plant gave me an opportunity to practice some bokeh like shots. Anyway these are the ones I liked among the 100 or so I shot!
Hey! I just had a few more thoughts about your vignette. Did you see Nicole’s at A Woven Life yet? She too hung some baskets on the wall! Haha – so interesting to see how minds think alike! Anyway, the one thing that particularly bothered me about the grouping is that there seems to be a color imbalance with the blue concentrated in the top right corner. What if you ran a bit of ribbon through the round basket – or maybe even painted the inside bottom of it? Just for some visual balance? Another thing that might look good as a whole is maybe putting a large solid colored paper behind the baskets to make the grouping less like they’re floating on the wall and more as an art piece. Or better yet, paint a block of color behind the baskets! Does that make sense? Anyway, I read over some of the new comments below and I, too, had thought the first photo would be stronger if the plant on the table was cropped out. And as the table IS apart of the wall, that totally counts as being a wall vignette along with all the accessories on it. That’s my opinion of a wall vignette, at least. Anyway, I stand by my original comment of it being very organic and textural – still love that. Just had a few other ideas you might want to think over, for future themes or projects. 🙂 ~M.

Appreciate it. I can see what you mean by the color being concentrated on top right corner. A touch of paint inside the round basket would have been nice.
As for the vignette being floating, that is kind of what I was going for.
I know the themes are open to individual interpretation. But I felt a wall vignette refers to something hanging on the wall. The plant was added for interest to the photo as a whole. But I also see your point about it being part of the wall vignette. There was nothing wrong with your interpretation of the definition of “wall vignette”! I just thought since you added the plant that sat on the table that sat up against the wall, that those items also qualify as being apart of the wall. Such is the case in entry halls when walls are shot with a console table and some art above, or whatever. I’m very honored you asked for input on another vignette! Will have a look now… ~M.
