Photography Styling Challenge #8 – Patterns

February 3, 2014 by Anjana @ At The Corner Of Happy And Harried 22 Comments

PSC #8 - Patterns

Around here, the first Monday of the month can only mean one thing – time for another Photo Styling Challenge post! The themes are getting quite challenging with each passing month.

This month’s concept is rather interesting – Patterns. They are all around us. We just need to look for them with a critical eye.

But how does one go about staging patterns? When I thought more about this concept, I had visions of pretty fabric swimming in my mind. Don’t ask me why. Like any Indian gal, I associate the word “pattern” mostly with swathes of pretty fabric. I truly wished I were back home with mom and her gorgeous saree collection. They would have made for some pretty amazing pics. Now that I am here in the US, my wardrobe is pretty boring (read monochromatic, neutral and safe), so fabrics won’t do.

Then somehow I lost track of time and before I knew it, it was the last weekend of January… Eeeeks! I have to admit, but I kind of took the easy way out this moth. So please bear with me.

Photography Styling Challenge #8 - Patterns - Watercolor Paper Shapes

One day, I was playing with Boy’s watercolors (ahem!) and just went to town, splashing colors on some sheets of paper. Then I cut them up into hearts. Because you know, it is February and with all the heart themed goodies stocked in the shops, I think my brain worked on auto-pilot. Then I strung some on yarn and hung them up. I had of course, photographed them!

Photography Styling Challenge #8 - Patterns - Hearts Garland

Not my best creation, I must admit. But whimsical enough. You know where I am going with this, don’t you? Please humor me and tell me you see patterns in these pictures.

Colors. Brush strokes. Heart shapes. There! Maybe the theme should’ve been ‘Whimsy’ (or ‘The story of a girl who couldn’t find any blog-worthy patterns in her home’)!

Hello, I like your hearts. 🙂 I think that if you shot these patterns straight on rather than at an angle that it would emphasize the patterns a little more. Oh also, try making your exposure a little less bright 🙂 I wonder if you could be crazy about this and make the hearts cover a person top half. Like a heart shirt. ^-^

      Thanks for the feedback, Inge.
Haha… a paper heart shirt would be quirky!

Lovely and light! There is an element of dreaminess to these photographs. And I most certainly see the patterns 🙂
I was pretty stumped with the theme, as much as we know there are patterns all around us, to style a scene and capture patterns was quite the challenge. You’ve done a great job! x

Thank you so much, Roxy. I fretted over the colors being washed out, but I guess they turned out okay!

You used patterned paper, too! I really like the 2nd and 4th pictures – actually, they look almost the same! Way to be crafty and think of something else to use besides fabric. ~M.

Yay! I went with paper too!! I just love watercolor.
I pouted for a while about not having any pretty fabric on hand, then got to work… haha…
The 2nd and 4th are almost identical, just a subtle difference in the focal points. I couldn’t choose between them, so I added both photos.

I agree with you, patterns are everywhere! We just need to look at them 🙂 That said, I am compelled to agree with Dillon: so orderly that this would have done well under Order! I love the patterns the whimsical mood it brings on 🙂

Like you, I often think of pattern and textiles in the same breath. Without those, however, you’ve done a great job creating your own very fun piece and meeting the styling challenge.

Oh my goodness. I was seconds away from photographing our heart garland for this challenge. That would have been too funny. We did ours out of pages from food magazines. I like that each color has e dedicated technique or pattern. Very cute!

OMG! that would have been the second time. Remember the basket wall vignettes we both did? Haha…
      Glad you liked this garland!

Thanks Supriti! It was just a little something that I came up with while watching a movie. But I really liked how the watercolor patterns turned out.

Hey Anjana, cool looking pics. This could have easily gone with the Order theme he he. Nice thinking on painted hearts. I like the pastel colours.
