I feel grapefruit is a fruit with an identity crisis. It belongs to the citrus family, but cannot seem to make its mind up on which end of the spectrum to belong to, whether to be pucker-worthy tart like limes and lemons or sweet like oranges?
So this gorgeous fruit has carved a niche following for itself. It falls somewhere in the middle with a distinctly acidic flesh, slightly sweet with a touch of bitterness. You either love it or hate. There is no middle ground. In our house, I am the only person who remotely likes grapefruit. I cannot help but buy them when in season, which is, right now!
Grapefruit is best eaten fresh, with maybe a teeny tiny sprinkling of sugar or salt over a cut half section. Or one can consume freshly squeezed juice. But how do you convert a non-believer? You make grapefruitade. You know, like limeade or lemonade, only so much more prettier.
It’s super simple to make as well. Begin by making a simple syrup infused with ginger and cardamom. Juice a few large grapefruits. Is this the proper plural form? Someone please enlighten me. To make a drink, mix part juice, part cold water and part syrup in a glass and serve.
And yes, I will be bringing a large batch for all of you at Angie’s Fiesta Friday Block Party today. Yay! Can you believe this party has been going on for a year now? I almost forgot all about today’s theme of appetizers, beverages and aperitifs. No, actually, I am very bad at them. Entrées and desserts, I can whip up in a jiffy, but I really suck at appetizers. I think I need help.
But I am very proud of this pretty drink and I am sure you’ll love it too. Like I told you, you can love grapefruit or hate it, but you will not be able to pass up a glass of grapefruitade. Plus, it’s pink! What’s not to love?!!
GRAPEFRUIT JUICE {WITH GINGER-INFUSED SIMPLE SYRUP}
You will need: (Makes 6-8 servings)
- Grapefruit – 2, large
- Sugar – 1 cup
- Water – 1 cup
- Ginger – a 1″ piece, cut into thick slices
- Cardamom powder – 1 tsp
- Ice cubes or cold water – to serve
- Mint leaves – to garnish
How to:
- Juice grapefruit and set aside. You can strain this to make a clear and pretty drink. If you do not want to lose the goodness of the pulp, then just use it as such.
- Make a simple syrup by boiling water, sugar, ginger and cardamom powder in a small saucepan. Simmer for a couple more minutes, remove from heat and allow to cool completely. Strain the syrup to remove ginger and cardamom pieces.
- To make a drink, add 1/4th part grapefruit juice, 1/4th part syrup and fill the rest with ice-cold water or crushed ice. Top with mint leaves and serve.
Notes:
- The sugar syrup can be kept in a bottle in the refrigerator for up to a week, maybe more.
- Follow the same procedure for limeade, lemonade and so on.
I hope everyone is having fun at Angie’s this weekend. Don’t forget to pop in to see what the others have brought to share. Cheers!

Oh my! I love grapefruit a lot, but I tend not to eat it very often because it can interact with a lot of medications and since I take a lot of different medications I find it easier just not to eat it to save the hassle!
But this grapefruit juice has me drooling, especially with the ginger and cardamom. I’m gonna have to do some googling and figure out if I can have this, because I need to make it asap!
Anjana @ At The Corner Of Happy & Harried says
Oh, I really hope you get to enjoy this drink, Michelle!

I too will try your version of this refreshing looking drink. We are grapefruit fans in this house, but your addition of cardamom and ginger (of which we are also fans) really take it to another level.

I used to either drink a cup of grapefruit juice,or eat a fresh half sprinkled with Truvia every morning, Anjana. It took a while to acquire the taste, but I did as it really helped my digestive tract. This drink looks so light and refreshing, thanks for sharing 🙂
Anjana @ At The Corner Of Happy & Harried says
I have heard only good things about grapefruit. Try this drink, it’s quite refreshing!

What a beauty Anjana! Aced the photos. Loved how you pairs a champagne colored light scarf with it and the color of the juice is just gorgeous. Might try soon.
Anjana @ At The Corner Of Happy & Harried says
Thank you so much, Sonal. I tried with both red and the light colored fabrics, but I too feel the blush shade works better. Of course, it helps to have a naturally pretty pink drink. Cheers at Angie’s!
